Shapes from Water

This series is from a body of work made in the southwest United States in March, 2006. For a show of digital photographs printed on canvas, I selected images from areas near Page, Arizona– a guided visit to Canyon X, and visits to The Wave and The Nautilus, two striking landforms in the vicinity.

Much of the US southwest consists of miles-thick layers of sandstone laid down in ancient seas which have long since vanished. What might surprise you is that the desert continues to be shaped by flowing water. When seasonal rains arrive, water collects quickly. Flash floods carry huge loads of rock and sand, scouring and sculpting as they go. The forms remaining in the stone attest to that swirling flood.
